Co-occurring Disorders Services

Co-occurring Disorders (COD) Services offers a unique and innovative clinical approach in treating those who have both a mental illness, and substance abuse problems. COD is designed to bridge the gap, to treat those with both disorders.  All clinicians who work within this program are either Chemical Dependency Specialists with specialized training in substance abuse and mental health issues or they work under the direct supervision of a Chemical Depdency Specialist.  COD is a treatment approach that utilizes individual and group counseling to maintain sobriety. There is also an aftercare program to help support clients once they have attained abstinence from addictive substances.

Below is a sample of services that may be provided:

Family Support & Education - Case managers work with family and friends whom the client identifies to educate them as to the symptoms of the client's diagnosis, and also teaches ways in which family and friends can assist the client.  May be provided in family or group meetings.

Protective Payee - Often, DSHS requires the client to have a protective payee.  In these circumstances the case manager takes control of the client's income in order to assist the client in meeting day to day and monthly bills.  The goal is to educate the client on budgeting skills in order to return control of the income to the client.

Medication Management - Case managers and medical staff work together to provide clients with safe access to medications.  This may mean: assisting the client with setting up a med box; distributing medication on a scheduled basis; advocating for the client with pharmaceutical companies who supply medication free of charge to the client; regular visits with the nurse or doctor; etc.

Voluntary/Involuntary Inpatient Treatment - Often clients are in need of a more controlled setting in which to deal with mental health/substance abuse issues.  When this is the case, the clinician works with the client and assists in placement into a suitable program.  When involuntary treatment is recommended, the clinician will work with the courts and the client to make this process as successful as possible.  While a client is hospitalized, the clinician works with the client and the hospital treatment staff to ensure a safe and successful transition back into the community, with a continuance in treatment and support.
